My wife recently has had her hair cut very short. She decided to go along with me to my barber for a trim, and wound up really short. The sides and back were cut with a #2 clipper(1/4") and the top is less than an inch long. Actually she looks quite good with her hair this short, but I think it is a little severe. We are in our mid-forties, and it is common to see women this age with short hair but not this short. Did she go too severe, or is it stylish?

You mean its a little short, but if she looks good that's all that matters. Some short hairstyles are very stylish, so I don't think you have to worry.
