Why do Indian (not Native American) parents cut their little girl's hair short?

I always see little Indian girls with short hair. Sometimes I mistake them for little boys. Then I see older Indian girls and women with beautiful hair down to their knees or feet. What is this Indian custom, its name, origin, traditions? Is it religious or having something to do with the caste system or women's treatment? Wikipedia had nothing on it...(surprisingly! lol!)

manageability, simple as that.

Its a custom that each Asian does after there hair grows.I didnt help much but I know a little about that.

Maybe they are parents who just don't like to be bothered having to try to untangle long hair. Have you done that with a screaming child? It is awful. They are probably smarter than we vain whites and let the girls wait until they are old enough to take care of their OWN hair, huh? I doubt it is cultural...

Some cultures rip the hair out by the root as some right of passage. Very painful..not sure why exactly. Saw an article on it not long ago..terrible.

I have no idea, I'm just making a random guess:

Maybe it's because they believe that it will help make the girls' hair stronger, or better looking, or something like that as it grows... because I've known people who had done that to their daughters for this reason, it's just that they were not Indians.

It's for that reason specifically, because when you are little, little kids are messy and stuff, and when they are older, they let it grow, to make it nice.

maybe its some kind of Taboo

Why do Indian (not Native American) parents cut their little girl's hair short?

think it's because it's easier to manage and for differant poojas (prayer rituals) where they put puspu (a lentil thing) on their hair and stuff

i really have no idea i tried looking it up but there was nothing sorry

Why do Indian (not Native American) parents cut their little girl's hair short?

I think it is because over there the women are lower then a dog. They are treated so bad. By cutting the hair they look like little boys, with that done the little girls will be left alone. Like I said This is what I think not that its the reason.

Its simple really.Grown up women look after their own hair(no matter how long it is.Where as kids need their moms to look after their hair(if its long).

But where do you live?I live in India and here, most girls have hair a few inches below their shoulders.

many hindus cut their daughters hair short but the sikh people do not believe in cutting their hair so their hair is always long. You're probably comparing two different cultures from different regions

  1. In Hindu tradition, the hair from birth is associated with undesirable traits from past lives. Thus at the time of the mundan, the child is freshly shaven to signify freedom from the past and moving into the future. It is also said that the shaving of the hair stimulates proper growth of the brain and nerves, and that the sikha, a tuft at the crown of the head, protects the memory.[2]
Hindus practice a variety of rituals from birth to death. Collectively these are known as saṃskāras, meaning rites of purification, and are believed to make the body pure and fit for worship. A boy's first haircut, known as choula, is one such samskara and is considered an event of great auspiciousness. The lawbooks or smritis prescribe that a boy must have his haircut in his first or third year. While complete tonsure is common, some Hindus prefer to leave some hair on the head, distinguishing this rite from the inauspicious tonsure that occurs upon the death of a parent. Those that practice complete tonsure generally ritually offer the hair to their family deity. Many travel to temples such as the famed Tirumala Venkateswara Temple of Lord Vishnu to perform this ceremony.
Traditionally, a Hindu girl never has her hair cut after the first haircut which generally happens at the age of 11 months; So the first haircut for the girl is very important because that is the only time they do. However, some Hindus practice a tonsure ceremony for girls as well. The details vary by sect, locality, family, and country.

  2. It is a Hindu Ritual called Mundan. The hair is shaved before the baby turns three for good luck, and to protect the baby from impurities. Also, it just helps the hair grow in more evenly.
